Family WILL be getting SGLI. There are only a couple of circumstances where SGLI will not pay out.

I thought one of them was a "Line of Duty Determination" that discerned this sort of thing...like not wearing a seatbelt? I could be wrong, it has been a long time since I dealt with a situation like this.

There is.

Same as not wearing protective gear or your seat belt

Wrong

Cause of death is irrelevant for purposes of paying SGLI (see 38 USC Sections 1965 - 1976 and
38 CFR Part 9). So long as you are covered, SGLI will pay your beneficiaries even if your death
is the result of DUI or not wearing a seat belt (even suicide is covered). Again, cause of death is
irrelevant for purposes of paying SGLI.
SGLI will not pay out in certain circumstances, but these circumstances relate to whether the
individual was covered by SGLI at the time of death. For example, a service member who is
AWOL for more than 30 days, confined by civilian authorities for more than 30 days, or serves
more than 30 days under a court martial sentence involving total forfeiture of all pay and
allowances is no longer covered by SGLI (see 38 U.S.C. Section 1968(a)(1)(B)). Further, any
person guilty of mutiny, treason, spying, or desertion, or who because of conscientious
objections, refuses to perform service in the Armed Forces of the U.S. or refuses to wear the
uniform is not covered by SGLI (see 38 U.S.C. Section 1973).
The factors that you mention (i.e. DUI or not wearing a seat belt in a jurisdiction that requires the
use of one) could well be the basis for denying Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC) to
otherwise eligible beneficiaries. The reason is that in order for your beneficiaries to receive DIC
your death must not have been due to your own misconduct. There is no such test for SGLI..

True or False: SGLI won't pay if I die in a "black-zoned" area or a "no-go."

False. SGLI claims are paid regardless of the location of the death.

True or False: SGLI or VGLI won't pay if I die in a motor vehicle accident or airplane accident and wasn't wearing a seat belt.

False: SGLI or VGLI claims are paid regardless of whether the member was or was not wearing a seatbelt.

True or False: SGLI or VGLI won't pay if I die in a motorcycle accident and I was not wearing a helmet.

False: Your SGLI or VGLI proceeds will be paid to your beneficiary or beneficiaries, regardless of whether you were or were not wearing a helmet.

In the article is says there is no prohibition against people at holloman going to jaurez, since he was from holloman he didnt technically do anything wrong so line of duty shouldnt be a problem.

That article is wrong. We have not been allowed to go to Jaurez for quite a while yet. I think Shirts/Commanders use the SGLI nonpayment thing to scare Airmen. Our shirt told us he may not get his SGLI because the area he was in is off limits. That is obviously not true.

Those were the days.

Sincere condolences to SSgt David Booher's family and friends for their loss.

That having been said, with all due respect; SSgt Booher basically did himself.

Reality sucks.
