11th Wing commander fired

The Air Force abruptly fired the commander of the 11th Wing at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., after losing confidence in his ability to lead, according to a service news release.

Col. Jon Roop had been commander since June 2008, serving 16 months of what is typically a two-year assignment. The vice commander, Col. Carl Gramlick, will lead the wing until a new commander is appointed, according to the statement from the Air Force District of Washington, which oversees the 11th Wing.

AFDW Commander Maj. Gen. Ralph Jodice relieved Roop of command Tuesday, citing a loss of faith, trust and confidence in his ability to lead.

“He did not meet the leadership example we expect in our Air Force,” Jodice said through an AFDW spokeswoman. “We hold our leaders to a higher standard.”

The spokeswoman, Lynda Valentine, would not say whether job performance or personal behavior led to Roop’s dismissal but did say no criminal charges have been filed or are pending.

Valentine also would not say whether any administrative action been taken against Roop, citing the law protecting an individual’s privacy rights.

Roop’s official biography has been removed from the AFDW and Bolling Web sites, though Valentine said Roop remains on active duty, assigned to AFDW.

The 11th Wing provides administrative support to Air Force headquarters and is known as “The Chief’s Own.” The wing is home to the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force Band. More than 1,600 military and civilians are assigned to the wing.

Roop is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and began his career in 1986. He has commanded a civil engineering squadron and an expeditionary mission support group in Iraq. Roop has also served at the Pentagon and on a Joint Staff. Prior to assuming command of the 11th Wing, he was the vice commander of the Air Force District of Washington.

Gramlick, Roop’s replacement, is a command pilot with more than 3,700 flying hours in the B-52. During Operation Desert Storm he flew more than 163 combat hours and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. He previously served as commander of the 340th Weapons Squadron at Barksdale Air Force Base, La.

Well, I have to hand it to Alice and the Times Staff, they are on top of things, just came from the web site, for the 11th Wing... not much detail.

I would like to understand a little more, you know, fired after all those years of service.... whats up ya know.

Yeah, I would like to know too. All of a sudden fired but then saying no criminal charges filed or none pending. Probably got caught with his hand in the cookie jar

Had to be zipper issues. He seemed arrogant and abrasive to enlisted also. When you turn people off they tend to come back and haunt you later, especially when you are in a position of leadership.

I hope he fights this, because he'll win if he does. But he wasn't removed for performance or indiscretion. He's getting a raw deal.

I doubt any fired Wing CC fought the action after they left their boss's office, when given the word to pack up. I didn't like this guy but I want him to get a fair deal. We'll hear more soon as the rumors are flying already.

WOW! I've have several one-on-one conversations with the Col, he was always open to candid idea's, commends, and seemed (to my SNCO eye) very approachable and professional…I have to assume he did something very questionable. After a little digging there are a couple of posts sighting “Sexual Indiscretion”…I’ve met his family, I sure hope that’s not the case.

All I can say in the end, it’s outstanding to see all AF personnel being held to a high standard!

I have met him before as well, and can say he was a bit abrasive as well, not sure what he did, but Wing CC's don't normally get fired for no reason, most likely as all the other post have hinted at, previous cases have involved, adultery, DUI's, and other such infractions, and the fact there weren't nukes involved, it is most likely one of the others....

Was he a former pilot? I doubt it because they take care of each other...but if he was....then he reeeallly f' some stuff up to get canned like that with almost 4 months left..
