Lightbulb All Marine Mixed Martial Arts Team!

Every base you go to around the military regardless of service have those that are enthusiasts of mixed martial arts. I am one of them. Some of them just like to watch and others, like myself get involved. My question is when are we going to create an All Marine Mixed Martial Arts Team. It only seems inevitable. It betters us as warriors preparing us for the fight. We can establish teams on each base and have tryouts and competitions. Plus an All Marine MMA Team to compete against the other branches and possibly enter a team into the International Fight Leage (IFL). Now that would be something I'd enlist or re-enlist for. I'm not saying that you even have to be a black belt. Believe me just because you got a MCMAP belt doesn't mean you know or can do anything. I'm a tan belt and I've got a collection of belts from people I've tapped out or knocked out. Have an open tryout regardless of belt. We want the best, not the best on paper.

How many are going to be on a team? When someone breaks an arm or a leg, can their replacement be brought in before the next scheduled fight?

JHB...what was the original intent on MCMAP? To start a team?

1. to answer your question, i don't think it (MCMAP) was intended to start an MMA team. based on my memory (i EAS'd in 2002) MCMAP is a way to get Marines training to defend themselves in an environment where they may not have their weapons available. its was also intended (if my memory is correct) to sort of 'bridge the gap' between Marines in a combat arms MOS/unit and those that are not combat arms...enable them to still have a 'warrior' mentality...

*disclaimer: folks who read this may or may not agree with #1...

2. in responding to the OP, i felt the OP meant an all MMA team like how all the services have a "all (insert branch here) Basketball Team". i think an all Marine MMA team would be cool, but as we all know, the needs of the Corps come first

3. i didn't get to qualify under MCMAP before i EAS'd cuz my Gunny kept me in the shop to oversee all the hard work we had to do, surveying, packaging, DRMOing, and transporting millions of dollars of cold weather, hot weather gear in order to close a big @ss warehouse that the Corps no longer needed

4. if it was up to me, i would've been released to go qualify, at least at the tan belt level...but hard working LCpls were needed elsewhere (thanks Gunny Lobes )

JHB, I was just being facetious, but to start a MMA Team...not going to happen. I know what the intent was for the MCMAP and the Corps is, if you remember, SHORT ON MARINES.

The Marine Corps takes a lot of pride in MCMAP. It is a false sense of security for Marines. It gives many of them fat heads and they end up in bar fights. The set up of the MCMAP system is only halfway there. It is a practice thing. You must do it on a regular basis in order to be proficient in it.

As for this MMA Team. The Marine Corps was the #1 sponsor for UFC. They still sponsor the UFC. They utilize Marines like Brian Stann's (current WEC Light heavyweight champion) high profile image as an added reucruitment method. There are so many Marines invovled in this that are at all levels of the echelon. It is sure to happen, the question is how soon.

There is a standing policy regarding MMA and Marines. The Marine Corps is okay with it. They like the idea that Marines are going above and beyond and training themselves to be that warrior. But in regards to Marines getting injured and nondeployable. The Marine Corps leaves that up to each individual unit. Obviously if a Marine is constantly getting injured then something is wrong. Most likely that Marines training regime

I personally don't see why we shouldn't have one. I mean Marines get to go and try out for things like the All Marine Chess Team and the All Marine Cross Country Team. So why not have an All Marine Mixed Martial Arts Team? It would make sense to me to give Marines that opportunity if we're going to send a Marine TAD to play chess.

I've been in almost 15 years and I've never heard about the ALL MARINE CHESS TEAM. WOW!!! Maybe the Corps should start a MMA Team.

Yeah it is real and it is really funny too. I got the all hands email from my 1st Sgt for tryouts. I thought it was a joke. It wasn't. There are some crazy All Marine Events.
