Is this an event I'd be able to get TAD or PTAD orders for?

Do you know of any other events?
I always have a hard time convincing each of my commands I go to that this is a legitimate sport. It is not like I am out bar fighting. There are rules, judges, referees, doctors, trainers, etc. A lot of time and preparation goes into this. But every time you say I do MMA someone automatically thinks oh he must be a bad ass. I'm gonna have to watch out for him. I have never once been injured through training or competition in the last 6 years doing this. But I've been injured many times through unit PT, work, car accident, dirtbike wreck, etc. This sport is a lot safer than what people really think. There has to be a way to open their eyes and show them that. Show them that this is one of the best sportsman like conduct/respectable sports today.

OK to answer the questions regarding a so-called Marine Corps MMA team. There used to be a (West Coast) Marine Corps Pankration team. (I was on it) But it got disbanded after one tournament and was reassembled as the Marine Corps Submission Wrestling team. There were two teams one at SOI(w) and one based out of Camp Margarita (Both camps are on Camp Pendleton) and then they became one. I have fought in numerous tournaments and a couple through SoCal Pankration / Fightleague and they are great fun. I suggest everyone try it out. I will be participting in the one mentioned above.
Another point the purpose of MCMAP is definately not to make u a proficient ground fighter, or a great striker it's to give people tools to fight, and defend themselves. Not to win a tournament somewhere. Yes the techniques were developed by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in different martial arts but they were designed and added to MCMAP because of their relative ease to execute, and effectiveness when used by people of all shapes, strengths, and sizes. Now will MCMAP work against all opponents? No. Will MCMAP work against our average everyday dumb-a$$? Yes. Lastly the Marine Corps developed MCMAP not to only each Marines how to fight but how to act and live positively through periods of instruction on ethics, ethos, and morals. If all you do is get "thrashed" or learn a few techniques and get a belt you are getting shorted. If your chain of command is telling you there is no time to get you to the next belt level I want to see what the unit's program is for physical fitness. Per the Marine Corps Order every Marine is required to participate in 3 hours of PT a week. MCMAP is trying to get away from these 3 week MCMAP-a-thons were you train for 8 hours a day or some odd number and get a belt at the end of a ceremony (accept in the case of authorized instructor courses). Every unit should have some level of instructor and they should be able to find a way to integrate the normal unit PT and MCMAP. To get a gray belt it's approximately 35 hours of instruction with sustainment, techniques, and tie-ins. If your unit can't make that happen you should also remind them (using act, and bearing) that per the MarAdmin the CMC has stated every non-infantry Marine will be a gray belt and every infantry/combat arms MOS should be green belt by FY09. Another way is to get with an instructor during your off time (how, after work) and have him/her train you up. Initiative can be contagious and if u get your other Marines and Sailors will want to get their belts. |

Yes, MARINES, there is a Chess Club. It exists as certainly as MCCS and MBST and deployment exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

So, how would we go about setting up a MMA team? I know some Marines that started thier own club back in 29; Fight Club 29. If the Corps had an MMA team, it would deffinatly boost enlistments, renlistments, and troop morale. The question is: Who do we need to contact to start this team?

They are already in the process. At the wrestling gym on Camp Lejuene. they are doing training everyday after work. around 1800. Saturday july 25th, they are holding a competition. the Top 2 Marines in each weight class will be awarded with TAD orders to the all marine MMA team. i believe it will be just like the boxing team.. Everyday, your appointed place of duty will be the gym where you will work out 2-3 times a day. and im sure they will incorperate some kind of community service with training kids or something just like the boxing team..
Sounds good to me.. ![]() |
