Default Home inspections

Inspections are a part of life in the Marine Corps. Everything from uniforms to service weapons undergo regular inspections. But,what about Marines' homes? Has your command conducted home inspections at your home either on base or off base? Has someone in your command ever paid you an unannounced home visit to see how you are living?

Ummm, No. Not no, hell no! Barracks for single Marines, sure - fair game. But if you are suggesting the chain of command come into an off-base residence where a civilian spouse and children reside and violate their privacy with an "inspection," I'd say that CoC better go see JAG. That, or they can go see a local magistrate and get a search warrant prior to the inspection - that would certainly suffice. But, the off base home is either personally owned or there's a rent agreement and in either case, is not USMC property not does the Corps have the right to enter without a warrant - try to google this word "U.S. Constitution," you may find you learn a lot there

I think they're more referring to on-post housing, which is owned by the individual service, and either maintained by them or a contractor that they pay. Either way, I'm pretty sure that there is a clause in the rental/lease agreement that you may be required to submit to an inspection of your home if there is sufficient cause to believe you are not keeping it properly maintained. Just like your private landlord can come in to inspect the condition of his rental unit if he/she feels that you are being destructive to his property.

In both cases, they can't just come in. They have to make arrangements and come at an appointed time. There should be sufficient notice. For completely private unit ownership, there is no provision for the command to inspect anything, as the military has no rights to the property itself. But post housing, either on or off base, is the property of the mililtary and they can come in.

That being said, I've lived in both on/off post military housing and they've never even asked to come in. This is Army and Navy housing in two places. My command has way too much to do to even entertain the idea.

No. No one in my chain of command has paid me a visit for "inspect" my home. I will admit though, that my old SSgt was suppose to look into the place I was moving into when I first moved in, because I was a newly married PFC, but it kept getting postponed, and never happend.

But, my take on it, is I don't believe on base or off base housing need inspections. Now, I can see if a LCpl is coming into work all the time smelling, dirty cammies, improper hygiene, and its appears a problem exists that could relate his living conditions, then I think it would be okay for the NCO, SNCO to take a look at his house and where he lives. But, if there is no indication that his living conditions are a problem, then I don't see a reason for an inspection.

But, at the same time, while I'm definitely not for it, we as Marines are held to a higher standard. And its pretty well known if you don't live in the barracks, life really isnt too bad. The guys in the barracks are subject to that retarded ass inspection every Wednesday. While it would be outrageous, I wouldnt put it pass the Marine Corps to make it mandatory for all Marine's homes to be inspected. Obviously that wont float well with most, because most tend to leave work and work, and de damned if they gotta deal with Marine Corps shit in their own home. Also, that puts the wife and/or children in the mix to make sure the house is "inspectable clean."

This has been floating around for years..and I mean years. Not one person in any of my prior commands has ever said to me, "hey we are coming to inspect your home."

Why would they? What would it accomplish? Hell, we can barely get Marines to just "stop by" the Barracks now. I know no one is going to take the time to drive 15 miles passed the base to come and check out my crib.

No, they meant off-base too.

I tell you what - I'll be damned if anyone comes onto my property to inspect it. What, are they going to take me to mast because I put off doing the dishes for a day, or my grass is a quarter inch too high?

I could also have my wife (i.e., not me) call the police and have anyone doing the "inspecting" arrested for trespassing. The inspections would stop with a quickness when all these NCO's are ending up in jail.

Yeah, but the UCMJ would get you. That's why it's best to hand the gun over to your wife.
