  • Army Capt. Robert J. Yllescas, 31, of Lincoln, Neb., died Dec. 1 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., of wounds suffered Oct. 28 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit at Combat Outpost Keating, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Solomon T. Sam, 31, of Majuro, Marshall Islands; assigned to the 523rd Engineer Company, 84th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; died from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device Dec. 4 in Mosul, Iraq. Also killed was Sgt. John J. Savage.

  • Army Sgt. John J. Savage, 26, of Weatherford, Texas; assigned to the 103rd Engineer Company, 94th Engineer Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; died from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device Dec. 4 in Mosul, Iraq. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Solomon T. Sam.

  • Army Pvt. Colman J. Meadows III, 19, of Senoia, Ga.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Dec. 16, at Forward Operating Base Ramrod, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Robert L. Johnson, 21, of Central Point, Ore.; assigned to the 5th Combat Logistics Battalion, 1st Combat Logistics Regiment, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; died Dec. 20 at Camp Baharia, Iraq, as a result of a non-hostile incident.

  • Army Pfc. Coleman W. Hinkefent, 19, of Coweta, Okla.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany; died Dec. 20, 2008 in Homburg, Germany of a non-combat related illness.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan W. Dean, 25, of Henagar, Ala.; assigned to the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Dec. 20, in Bayji, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident in Tikrit, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Thomas Reilly Jr., 19, of London, Ky.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; died Dec. 21 in Karmah, Iraq, while supporting combat operations.

  • Army Cpl. Charles P. Gaffney Jr., 42, of Phoenix, Ariz., assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Dec. 24 in Orgun-E, Afghanistan, when his combat outpost received enemy rocket fire.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Christopher G. Smith, 28, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.; died Dec. 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. Also killed were Spc. Stephen. M. Okray and Spc. Stephen G. Zapasnik.

  • Army Spc. Stephen G. Zapasnik, 19, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.; died Dec. 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. Also killed were Spc. Stephen. M. Okray and Staff Sgt. Christopher G. Smith.

  • Army Spc. Stephen M. Okray, 21, of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.; died Dec. 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. Also killed were Staff Sgt. Christopher G. Smith and Spc. Stephen G. Zapasnik.

  • Army Maj. John P. Pryor, 42, of Moorestown, N.J.; assigned to the 1st Medical Detachment, Forward Surgical Team, Fort Totten, N.Y.; died Dec. 25 in Mosul of wounds sustained when a mortar round impacted near his living quarters.

  • Navy Master-at-Arms Seaman Apprentice Joshua D. Seitz, 19, of Pensacola, Fla.; assigned to Naval Security Force, Naval Support Activity Bahrain; died Dec. 26 in Manama, Bahrain.

Lotter, 20, of Chester Heights, Pa.; was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; died Dec. 31 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when he was shot by enemy forces in Tikrit.

  • Army Pfc. Benjamin B. Tollefson, 22, of Concord, Calif.; assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.; died Dec. 31 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire in Ghazaliya.
