September 01, 2003
  • Army Sgt. Charles T. Caldwell, 38, of North Providence, R.I.; assigned to the 115th Military Police Company, Army National Guard, Cranston, R.I.; killed Sept. 1 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device on Main Supply Route Tampa, south of Baghdad, Iraq. Caldwell was one of two soldiers killed in the incident.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Cameron B. Sarno, 43, of Waipahu, Hawaii; assigned to the 257th Transportation Company, Army Reserve, Las Vegas, Nev.; died Sept. 1 when he was hit by a truck while changing his vehicle’s tire in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

  • Rhode Island Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Joseph Camara, 40, of New Bedford, Mass.; assigned to the 115th Military Police Company, U.S. Army National Guard, Cranston, R.I.; killed Sept. 1 on Main Supply Route Tampa, south of Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Another soldier also died in the incident.

  • Army Pfc. Christopher A. Sisson, 20, of Oak Park, Ill.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C.; died Sept. 2 in Baghdad, Iraq. Sisson was in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter participating in an air assault mission. The helicopter flipped and crashed on take off.

  • Air Force Tech. Sgt. Bruce E. Brown, 32, of Coatopa, Ala.; assigned to the 78th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Robins Air Force Base, Ga.; killed in a motor vehicle accident on Sept. 4 near Udeid, Qatar.

  • Army Spc. Jarrett B. Thompson, 27, of Dover, Del.; assigned to the 946th Transportation Company, U.S. Army Reserve, Lewes, Del.; died Sept. 7 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Thompson was in a convoy on Aug. 30 when a civilian vehicle passed the convoy and swerved between the lead military vehicle and an approaching Iraqi truck. The driver of the civilian vehicle hit Thompson’s truck. Thompson was medically evacuated to WRAMC where he later died of his injuries.

  • Army Spc. Ryan G. Carlock, 25, of Macomb, Ill.; assigned to the 416th Transportation Company, 260th Quartermaster Battalion (Petroleum Support), Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.; killed Sept. 9 northwest of Baghdad when his fuel truck was attacked by the enemy.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Robsky Jr., 31, of Elizaville, N.Y.; assigned to the 759th Ordnance Company, Fort Irwin, Calif.; killed Sept. 10 in Baghdad, Iraq, by an improvised explosive device. Robsky was on call to neutralize an improvised explosive device after the initial attempt failed. When he returned to the site to render it safe, the explosive device detonated.

  • Army Sgt. Henry Ybarra III, 32, of Austin, Texas; assigned to D Troop, 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry, Illesheim, Germany; died Sept. 11 in Balad, Iraq, when the tire he was changing on a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck exploded.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class William M. Bennett, 35, of Seymour, Tenn.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed Sept. 12 in Ramadi, Iraq, when his unit executed a raid on enemy forces.

  • Army Master Sgt. Kevin N. Morehead, 33, of Little Rock, Ark.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed Sept. 12 in Ramadi, Iraq, when his unit executed a raid on enemy forces.

  • Army Sgt. Trevor A. Blumberg, 22, of Canton, Mich.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Sept. 14 in Fallujah when two improvised explosive devices struck his vehicle while he was on patrol.

  • Army Spc. Alyssa R. Peterson, 27, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; assigned C Company, 311th Military intelligence Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); died Sept. 15 near Tel Afar, Iraq, from a non-combat weapons discharge.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Kevin C. Kimmerly, 31, of North Creek, N.Y.; assigned to B Battery, 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, based in Baumholder, Germany; killed while on patrol when his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade Sept. 15 in Baghdad.

  • Army Capt. Brian R. Faunce, 28, of Philadelphia; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Carson, Colo.; died Sept. 18 in Asad, Iraq. Faunce was moving in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle when his vehicle crossed under some low laying power lines. The soldier reached up and grabbed the lines and was fatally injured.

Wright, 27, of Morgan, Texas; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Sept. 18 during an ambush by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Tikrit, Iraq. Two other soldiers from his unit also were killed.

Two other soldiers from his unit also were killed.

Two other soldiers from his unit also were killed.

  • Army Sgt. David T. Friedrich, 26, of Hammond, N.Y.; assigned to B Company, 325th Military Intelligence Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve, Waterbury, Conn.; killed Sept. 20 in a mortar attack in Abu Ghraib, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Lunsford B. Brown II, 27, of Creedmore, N.C.; assigned to A Company, 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion, Patton Barracks, Germany; killed Sept. 20 in a mortar attack in Abu Ghraib, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Frederick L. Miller Jr., 27, of Hagerstown, Ind.; assigned to Troop K, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed while on security patrol Sept. 20 in Ramadi, Iraq. His vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

  • Army Spc. Paul J. Sturino, 21, of Rice Lake, Wis.; assigned to B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Sept. 22 from a non-combat weapons discharge in Quest, Iraq.

  • Rhode Island Army National Guard Spc. Michael Andrade, 28, of Bristol, Rhode Island; attached to the 115th Military Police Company, U.S. Army National Guard; died Sept. 24 of injuries he sustained when a 5-ton truck struck his Humvee in Balad, Iraq.

  • Wyoming Army National Guard Capt. Robert L. Lucero, 34, of Casper, Wyo.; assigned to the 4th Infantry Division Rear Area Operation Center, U.S. Army National Guard, Casper, Wyo.; killed Sept. 25 by an improvised explosive device in Tikrit, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Kyle G. Thomas, 23, of Topeka, Kan.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Fort Ederle, Italy; killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol Sept. 25 in Tikrit, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class Robert E. Rooney, 43, of Nashua, N.H.; assigned to the 379th Engineer Company, U.S. Army National Guard, based in Bourne, Mass.; died Sept. 25 at Shuabai Port, Kuwait, when he was struck by a forklift.

  • Army Sgt. Andrew Joseph Baddick, 26, of Jim Thorpe, Pa.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C.; drowned Sept. 29 as he tried to rescue another soldier whose vehicle had entered a canal near Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. Evan W. O’Neill, 19, of Haverhill, Mass.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum N.Y.; killed as a result of enemy fire on Sept. 29, 2003, in Afghanistan.

  • Army Pfc. Kristian E. Parker, 23, of Slidell, La.; assigned to the 205th Engineer Battalion, Louisiana National Guard, Slidell, La.; killed in a non-combat-related incident on Sept. 29, 2003, in Qatar.

  • Kentucky Army National Guard Sgt. Darrin K. Potter, 24, of Louisville, Ky.; assigned to the 223rd Military Police Company, Army National Guard, Louisville, Ky.; killed Sept. 29 when his vehicle left a road and went into a canal during a mission to search an area near Abu Ghraib Prison, outside Baghdad, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Christopher E. Cutchall, 30, of McConnellsburg, Pa.; assigned to Delta Troop, 4th Cavalry, Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Sept. 29 when an improvised explosive device detonated next to his vehicle as he was traveling in a convoy west of Baghdad, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Dustin K. McGaugh, 20, of Derby, Kan.; assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 17th Field Artillery Brigade, Fort Sill, Okla.; died from a non-hostile gunshot wound on Sept. 30 in Balad, Iraq.
