Navy vet wins first match

BEIJING, China—Day one of wheelchair tennis Sept. 8 at the Olympic Green Tennis Center showcased a dominant U.S. team, winning five out of six matches.

Lee Hinson (Wallan, Australia/Jacksonville, Fla.) soundly beat Mauricio Pomme of Brazil, 6-1 and 6-3. Retired from the U.S. Navy, Hinson was evenly matched with Pomme, but Hinson played mentally and physically much stronger than Pomme. Of his first Paralympic win, Hinson said, “Today was redemption. Jon [Rydberg] and I went to the Parapan American Games and lost in the finals to Mauricio in doubles. My dad had just had a quadruple bypass, and my head wasn’t in it. But today my head and heart were in it.” Hinson plays singles on Sept. 9 against Belgium and doubles against Canada with Paul Moran.
