Task Force Med
The staff of Task Force Med at the brand-new, $17-million, Craig Joint Theater Hospital, Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan has come to know Afghanistan as a dangerous place to grow up. When the facility has excess capacity, injured local nationals with risk to life, limb or eyesight are treated. 20-30% of their patient load is made up of children. This is a vignette of Liaqat, a 5--year-old boy flown to CJTH after getting shot in the gut accidentally while playing near his home in Asadabad by an Afghan soldier who fumbled his AK-47 at a nearby vehicle checkpoint.
