MSgt. faces rape charge

An Air Force Academy noncommissioned officer faces rape charges tied to an alleged sexual assault after an undisclosed social event last July.
Master Sgt. Gregory S. Brooks was charged this week with Uniform Code of Military Justice violations for rape, indecent assault, failure to obey orders or regulations, adultery and soliciting another person to commit a crime.
The academy will not reveal the name of the alleged victim, a married woman, nor details of the charges against Brooks, also married. His Article 32 hearing, a preliminary evaluation similar to a grand jury proceeding, is not yet scheduled.
According to an academy report, Brooks, of the 10th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, asked the alleged victim to get drunk and have sex with him. The report accuses Brooks of kissing her neck, climbing on top of her and raping her.
Denver Post and Associated Press articles stating Brooks solicited another married man for sex are false, said Meade Warthen, an academy spokesman. A misreading of the charge sheet, Warthen said, is likely responsible for the error.
Brooks was not in confinement Thursday morning. If he is found guilty of all charges in a general court-martial, he faces a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, forfeiture of pay, dishonorable discharge and rank reduction to airman basic.
