Inquiry into F-16 bomb drop comes up empty

Staff report

Two investigations have failed to find what caused a dummy bomb on an Oklahoma Air National Guard F-16 to fall off and crash into an apartment building.

The incident happened March 13 during a training mission. An investigation by the Oklahoma Air Guard turned up no evidence of human error or mechanical anomalies. A second investigation ordered March 22 by Air National Guard Director Lt. Gen. Craig McKinley reached the same conclusion.

The best hope for an answer now lies with the plane’s Triple Ejector Rack, Oklahoma National Guard spokesman Col. Pat Scully said. The TER has been sent to Robins Air Force Base, Ga., for testing.
