‘Today’ airs live from Malmstrom

Hide the launch codes. NBC’s “Today” correspondent Al Roker will broadcast live Tuesday morning from a Minuteman III nuclear missile silo at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., as part of the show’s “Access Granted” series, which is filmed from highly secured spots.

Roker will broadcast one segment 10 feet above a nuclear warhead while standing on the exit doors of the missile silo, said Maj. Laurie Arellano, an Air Force Space Command spokeswoman.

“He’ll be standing on the deadliest location in the world,” she said.

The segments will air from Malmstrom at 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. local time. The first segment will be broadcast from the missile silo, the second from the missile control center.

Show producers spent the weekend filming Security Forces airmen demonstrating the strict measures taken to protect the missile fields where the warheads sit on alert, Arellano said.

“We felt this would be a great way to get the message out there about these dedicated airmen who work every day where perfection is the standard,” she said. “Sometimes, these airmen are forgotten sitting out in the missile fields, but it was great to have them get some attention.”

Malmstrom officials took careful steps to ensure that the “Today” cameras wouldn’t compromise operational security secrets associated with ballistic missile launch equipment or launch procedures during the live broadcast, Arellano said.
