Va. officials seek to delay Mayport carrier
Posted : Thursday Nov 20, 2008 12:07:35 EST
RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia officials are asking the Navy to delay its plan to base a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Florida until President-elect Obama takes office.
U.S. Sens. John Warner and Jim Webb and Gov. Tim Kaine said Thursday the plan to create a new homeport for a carrier in Mayport, Florida, is “fiscally irresponsible.”
The Navy estimates the move would cost at least $600 million, and the Virginia officials say the total could approach $1 billion.
The Navy has said it chose Florida in order to spread out its Atlantic fleet beyond Norfolk. But Webb says the Florida base offers no strategic advantage over Norfolk.
Warner and Webb sent Defense Secretary Robert Gates a letter asking him to delay the plan until the new administration takes office.
