Christmas Eve marks soldiers’ return
Posted : Wednesday Dec 24, 2008 6:38:12 EST
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Forget about Santa and his reindeer. The one thing families at Fort Campbell are searching the skies for this Christmas Eve is the plane that is carrying hundreds of soldiers home to the post on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line.
Members of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade are scheduled to be home on Christmas Eve, but military return flights are often delayed, and families may have to wait hours before the plane arrives.
The unit is returning from 12 months in Afghanistan, about 3 months earlier than expected. More than 1,100 soldiers are scheduled to come home before the new year.
Since October, about 11,000 soldiers have returned from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many of them got to celebrate the holidays at home for the first time in two years.
Another 9,000 are still completing a tour in Afghanistan.
