MADISON, Wis. — Many of the 3,200 Wisconsin National Guard soldiers beginning to arrive in Iraq will help run the two biggest prison camps.
The soldiers are part of the largest combat mobilization of the Wisconsin Guard in more than 60 years. They’ve been training at Camp McGregor in New Mexico and learning about riot shields, pepper spray and other weapons to control unruly detainees.
The troops will be based in heavily Sunni regions and guarding camps that are supposed to rehabilitate and release low-risk prisoners, most of them Sunni.
Two-thirds of the guard members will be stationed at Camp Cropper near the Baghdad airport and Camp Bucca near the Iraq-Kuwait border.
