NYC schools to monitor military recruiters

NEW YORK — New York City education officials are ordering public schools to develop plans to monitor on-campus military recruiting.

Beginning this fall, schools also must provide military opt-out forms to 9th and 10th grade students.

Currently, only 11th and 12th graders received them.

Information on opting out also will be added to instructions on students’ rights, and to materials for students taking an armed services aptitude test.

Civil liberties groups praised the new guidelines. Last year, they complained after schools gave military recruiters access to students’ names and contact information.

The groups said the recruiters lacked oversight and that some were too aggressive.

The number of students submitting opt-out forms rose last fall.
