A service member died Thursday in a military freefall training accident when he hit his head while landing.

His name and service branch were not released as of Friday afternoon, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident took place at the Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School’s Military Freefall School at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz., an Army news release said.

The student, who was attending the Military Freefall Jumpmaster course, injured his head in the early morning hours and was evacuated by air ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Army safety investigators have begun an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

The Military Freefall School suspended all air operations until further notice.
