Air Force: Ex-nurse to face trial for 3 deaths

SAN ANTONIO — A former military nurse will be court-martialed for allegedly killing three terminally ill patients at the Air Force’s largest hospital.
Capt. Michael Fontana is set to enter a plea in September at Lackland Air Force Base, near San Antonio. The military announced Tuesday that a trial date will also be set.
Fontana’s charged with murder in the deaths of three civilian patients at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland last summer. Prosecutors say all were given excessive amounts of painkillers.
At a May hearing, former colleagues of Fontana testified that they heard the 35-year-old defendant discuss his “aggressive” reputation for treating end-of-life patients.
Fontana hasn’t commented since being charged in March. He faces life in prison if convicted.
