Army to pull some Waikiki beach lifeguards

HONOLULU — Beachgoers on a stretch of Waikiki beach could soon be swimming at their own risk after the Army decided to pull its lifeguards to cut costs.

The Army says their lifeguards will no longer staff Fort DeRussy Beach fronting Hale Koa Hotel starting Oct. 1.

Lifeguards who work the beach, often packed with soldiers and other tourists during the summer, say there are several surf breaks there that could be dangerous for swimmers.

Honolulu officials say they haven’t decided whether to replace them with city lifeguards. And Hale Koa’s general manager says it can’t afford the $245,000 per year it would take to properly train its lifeguards for open-ocean rescues.
