Airmen providing humanitarian assistance following recent natural disasters in the Asia-Pacific region have finished their missions and are returning home, Pacific Air Forces announced Monday.
The missions included relief operations in American Samoa, which was hit by an earthquake and tsunami Sept. 29, and Indonesia, which suffered an earthquake Sept. 30.
The mission in Samoa began Sept. 30 when Hawaii Air National Guard crews flew two C-17s loaded with relief supplies and personnel. During the operation, 17 C-17 sorties delivered 212 relief personnel and 632½ tons of cargo to the island.
On Oct. 5, PacAF deployed a Humanitarian Assistance Rapid Response Team to Indonesia to provide emergency medical care. A field hospital set up by the team treated more than 1,900 patients, according to a PacAF press release.
The team included airmen from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; Andersen Air Force Base, Guam; and Yokota Air Base, Japan.
