Marines looking to wear some bling this year have a new option.
In conjunction with the Marine Corps Birthday on Tuesday, an Atlanta-based jeweler is selling Marine Corps-themed Faberge-style eggs, with all proceeds benefiting Marine charities.
Ilya Abelsky, A Russian immigrant and president of the Eggstravaganza Co., said he decided to make the eggs to thank the Marine Corps after becoming a U.S. citizen.
“I would imagine that in 234 years, this is the first time a Russian jeweler wants to wish Marines ‘happy birthday,’ ” he said. “This country gave us a new home, and we feel privileged to be citizens of the U.S.A.”
The eggs are hand-designed and made out of sterling silver, with 24-karat gold gild and multi-colored enamels applied. Onyx, lapis, crystal and other stones accent the design. They are priced at $99.
Abelsky said he has been in contact with Marine officials at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and is working with them to identify charity options.
