NORFOLK, Va. — Two Navy SEALs have been arraigned in a military court in Virginia for allegedly mistreating an Iraqi detainee.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe is accused of hitting the detainee in the stomach, dereliction of duty and lying to investigators.
McCabe deferred entering a plea until his trial, which was set for Jan. 19.
Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas pleaded not guilty to charges of dereliction of duty, lying to investigators and impeding an investigation. His trial was set for Jan. 11.
The military says a third Navy SEAL, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe, will be arraigned later on charges of dereliction and lying.
The charges stem from alleged mistreatment of an Iraqi believed to be linked to the 2004 killings of four U.S. contractors.
