Relay run honors ‘Chesty’ Puller

The legendary Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller once said that beer and whiskey will make Marines proud of themselves, so it is only fitting that the most decorated Marine of all time is honored each year with a rum-punch toast at his gravesite.

Representatives from Marine Corps Detachment Fort Lee, Va. — home of the school for bulk fuel, mortuary affairs and food services — recently completed the 16th Annual Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller Memorial Relay Run in honor of the only Marine to receive five Navy Crosses — the second highest decoration after the Medal of Honor. Here’s what you need to know about Chesty and the race:

• Chesty’s tale. Puller enlisted in the Corps in 1918 and fought in wars spanning from Haiti in 1919 through the Korean War, before retiring in 1955. He died Oct. 11, 1971, in Saluda, Va., after a long illness, and was buried in a cemetery along Highway 33, also known as “General Puller Highway.” He was 73.

• A new tradition. The first memorial run was Nov. 11, 1988, and fewer than 20 Marines participated in the 68-mile relay. Over the years, the event has grown to include nearly 150.

• Thank you, Chesty. Each year, the Marines hold a wreath-laying ceremony at his gravesite. The commanding officer says a prayer and everyone sings the Marines’ Hymn. Saluda residents often come out to watch the Marines toast one of the greats with a glass of rum punch.

• ‘Fortitude punch.’ This traditional rum cocktail is as much a part of the Corps’ history as Chesty himself. According to legend, the drink was served to potential Marine recruits at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia during the American Revolution, and it is a part of mess night to this day.

• Happy Birthday. Although this year’s run was Dec. 4, the event typically coincides with the Marine Corps birthday. The goal is not only to honor Chesty, but also to teach younger Marines the history and traditions of one of the service’s most famous leaders. Storms from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida delayed the event this year.
