House again OKs Navy Department name change

WASHINGTON — The House by voice vote Tuesday agreed to rename the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.

The House has approved similar legislation for eight years running, only to be thwarted by the Senate. A companion Senate bill awaits consideration.

The measure’s sponsor, Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., says his effort is merely recognizing the Marine Corps as part of the fighting team that includes the Navy.

“The Navy and the Marine Corps have always been one fighting team,” Jones said in a prepared statement. “Nothing is going to change that, but the Marines that have fought and lost their lives for this nation deserve to be officially recognized by the country they so honorably served.”
