Coast Guard sets hearing on boy’s death

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Only three of four Coast Guard members charged with crimes in connection with a crash that killed an 8-year-old boy at a holiday parade in San Diego will appear next week for the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing.
The Coast Guard gave no explanation Friday why the hearing was postponed for Petty Officer Lavelle M. Teague, who is accused of dereliction of duty. He faces the least serious charges among the four defendants.
The Article 32 hearing begins Tuesday in Alameda for Petty Officers Paul A. Ramos, Ian M. Howell and Brittany N. Rasmussen. Ramos, the boat coxswain, faces the most serious charge — involuntary manslaughter — punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
The vessel landed on a recreational boat, killing Anthony DeWeese.
