Wife found guilty in Navy doc’s stabbing death

SAN DIEGO — A woman who stabbed her Navy doctor husband in bed after discovering he was having an affair was convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday.

A San Diego Superior Court jury deliberated three days to reach a verdict for Jennifer Trayers, 43, who faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. She’ll be sentenced March 9.

She testified during trial that she confronted Dr. Frederick Trayers after he returned from a night shift at Balboa Naval Medical Center in December 2010 and asked how she should kill herself. She said she stabbed him in the back of the neck after struggling over a knife.

She said she didn’t recall stabbing the 41-year-old Navy lieutenant commander 10 more times.

Defense attorney Kerry Armstrong said his client was enraged after finding out her husband was having an affair with a woman he met on a hospital ship. He sought a conviction for voluntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors wanted a conviction for first-degree murder, but the jury found the killing was not premeditated. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said the verdict brought “a measure of justice to the victim’s family and friends.”
