1603: Less than four years after succeeding Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex, in command of English forces in Ireland, James Blount, Eighth Baron Mountjoy, compelled Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, to sign the Treaty of Mellifont, bringing the Nine Years War to an end. O'Neill reportedly wept when he learned that the English monarch against whom he had rebelled, Queen Elizabeth I, had died just six days earlier.
