Soon: A ‘rewards portal’
While service members who enjoy the hunt can scour up their own deals and discounts, many bargains — like those currently offered at Disney and Universal Studios Hollywood — are available only through installations’ tickets and tours offices.
There’s more to come: MWR and exchange officials are putting the final touches on a new travel “rewards portal” that will include the online deals offered at military exchanges and available to all branches of service. In addition to offering discounts for things such as cruises, escorted tours, excursions, resort stays and more, the program will offer rewards points, said one official.
The new portal will be available by April 21. Active-duty, reserve and Guard members, retirees and government civilians, and their families will be eligible. An ID card is required at check-in.
A quick search for resort deals in Hawaii on the new Web site, which is still in development and unavailable to the public, showed a number of options, including a seven-night stay at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach in Honolulu, for $1,219 — that works out to about $174 a night. The total discount savings is $150.
