Nobody wants to see the war in Afghanistan go on any longer than needed. But the proposal from America’s most well-known mercenary, Blackwater founder Erik Prince, to provide the Afghan military with his own private air force, seems like a bad idea. Politically, it makes some sense – getting the U.S. troops out of there is an appealing thought. But legally, operationally and strategically, turning over a massive air campaign to a shadowy company based in Dubai is not in America’s interests. Nevertheless, the size and capability of the air force that Prince is shilling – fighter jets, attack helicopters, ISR drones -- is simply stunning.
