2009 ConUS COLA rates with dependents
Service members in 56 high-cost areas across the country qualify for the continental U.S. cost-of-living allowance, or ConUS COLA, in 2009. The allowance compensates service members with command-sponsored dependents residing in the vicinity of the member's duty station for nonhousing expenses in areas where these costs exceed the national average by more than 8 percent. Rates are based, in part, on dependent status. To calculate your monthly allowance, multiply the payout rate for your paygrade, years of service and dependent status by the figure next to your duty station in the list of eligible locations found here. The 2009 rates that took effect Jan. 1:
