Ten new charities ranging from organizations that help military children to one that helps homeless veterans have joined the Combined Federal Campaign federation that specializes in military-affiliated charities.
They are among 61 charities accepted this year into the Military, Veterans and Patriotic Service Organizations of America CFC federation.Federations allow charities to be grouped by their mission and help donors more easily find charities of interest to them. A total of 2,257 national and international charitable groups are taking part in the CFC this year, up 10 percent from last year, said Edmund Byrnes, spokesman for the Office of Personnel Management.
About 30,000 local charities have applied for corresponding local CFC campaigns, with their eligibility determined by local coordinating committees.
The CFC campaign began Sept. 1 and ends Dec. 15. Local officials decide the window of time within those months that is best for their campaigns.
Last year, the MVPSOA federation saw a much larger jump in donations than the overall CFC, said Patrick Maguire, business manager for the federation.
The federation took in $12.8 million in donations in 2007, a 20 percent increase over 2006. The overall CFC campaign raised $273 million, an increase of just 0.5 percent over 2006.
Begin optional trim Maguire said the recent economic turmoil probably will have an effect on charitable giving this year. "But from this constituency, it won't be as much of an effect as it is on others," he said. "At other times when it's tough to raise money elsewhere, federal employees have stepped up to the plate."
The CFC also makes it easier for federal workers to give to the charity of their choice, he said. Some private-sector fundraising efforts don't give employees a choice of individual charities in their giving campaigns, he said. End optional trim
