Perhaps the most surprising result of Round 1 was the early exit of "Dr. Strangelove," ranked as one of the top seeds by our panel of movie experts, at the hands of "In Harm's Way," a 1965 Navy drama featuring Wayne and Kirk Douglas.

Fans of George C. Scott in a general's uniform didn't lose out entirely: "Patton" charged into the second round along with seven of the eight highest-seeded films. Other upsets included "Midway" downing "MASH," "Sergeant York" edging "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" besting "Inglourious Basterds."

Other close matchups included "The Hunt for Red October" taking out "Good Morning, Vietnam," "The Deer Hunter" barely beating the German-language submarine epic "Das Boot," and Cruise's "Born on the Fourth of July" losing out to the Colonial Marines of "Aliens."

In Round 2, Cruise's "A Few Good Men" is squaring off against "Forrest Gump" in an early 1990s battle, while his earlier work in "Top Gun" goes up against Bill Murray and Harold Ramis in "Stripes."

Other star-studded showdowns include "Braveheart" vs. "Glory," "Saving Private Ryan" vs. "We Were Soldiers" and "American Sniper" vs. "Zero Dark Thirty."

And "In Harm's Way" won't have it easy, facing "The Longest Day" — a 1962 D-Day epic starring Henry Fonda, Richard Burton, Sean Connery ... and John Wayne.

Round 2 voting ends Tuesday night. A bracket winner will be crowned in early April.
