That field will be chopped in half by Sunday night, and as it shrinks, some cinema classics will find themselves on the cutting room floor.

Here are three tight Round 3 races through early voting (percentages as of Thursday afternoon). Vote here to have your say, and click here for more information about the bracket.

Black Hawk Down (53.2 percent) vs. American Sniper (46.8 percent)

Bradley Cooper's portrayal of SEAL sniper Chris Kyle helped "Sniper" shatter box-office expectations and become the highest-grossing military movie ever made. That doesn't guarantee it'll survive the round against its higher-seeded opponent.

Top Gun (54.2 percent) vs. Apocalypse Now (45.8 percent)

Thumbs-up, so far, for "Top Gun" fans as Tom Cruise's foray as a fighter pilot stands poised to take out "Apocalypse Now."

The 1980s hit that drew a generation to Navy aviation represents the best shot for a Tom Cruise flick to reach the Round of 8: "A Few Good Men" has found itself on the wrong side of a beating from Gunny Hartman and "Full Metal Jacket," but fans of courtroom drama still have enough time to rally for an upset.

The Dirty Dozen (53 percent) vs. The Great Escape (47 percent)

Lee Marvin's band of criminals and Steve McQueen's motorcycle mayhem have raced through the early rounds, with neither movie receiving less than two-thirds of the vote in any matchup.

The winner in this World War II showdown will face another film from that period in the regional final: Either "The Longest Day" or "The Bridge on the River Kwai." So far, the D-Day epic that includes a who's who of early 1960s fame (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Richard Burton, even teen idol Fabian) has an early edge over the Burma-based prisoner of war saga.
