Sixty years ago, the nation declared its first Veterans Day celebration.

Now Military Times invites you to help celebrate your own favorite veteran with our #MyVeteran campaign.

Whether you're a veteran yourself looking to honor a battle buddy or fallen friend, a spouse or family member searching for a special way to spotlight that most special veteran in your life, or a civilian who just wants to say thank you to a friend who served, we hope you'll join in by posting photos or just some thoughtful words along with the #MyVeteran hashtag.

"Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

That's how President Dwight D. Eisenhower marked the occasion in his proclamation reserving Nov. 11, 1954, as the first "Veterans Day."

At the time, the nation was transitioning from the Armistice Day tradition honoring those who fought in World War I, which famously ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, to a wider day of celebration for all who have served in the military.

Last year, we started the #MyVeteran hashtag project to expand that celebration across social media.

From Twitter-pic tributes of aging World War II warriors in wheelchairs to Instagram posts of modern-day combat vets fresh from the fight in Afghanistan, the campaign drew a spirited response.

This year, we want to make it even bigger with all-out 11-day blitz. Beginning now, post your photos and/or words tagged with #MyVeteran to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

Go to www.militarytimes.com/myveteran — and then watch this year's tributes start rolling in.

On Nov. 1, we'll begin spotlighting some of our favorites for daily features on our social media channels, and we'll choose more to publish in our print editions on newsstands the week of Veterans Day.

The sooner you start posting, the better your chances for a shout-out.
