Former Marine Corps Sgt. Dakota Meyer, whose heroism in Afghanistan earned him a Medal of Honor for his "daring initiative and bold fighting spirit," is engaged to be married to the daughter of a former vice presidential nominee.

His fiancee is Bristol Palin. She is a reality television personality and the daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican nominee for vice president.

The engagement was announced on the photo sharing site Instagram.

Meyer, 26, was part of a pre-dawn patrol in the Afghan village of Ganjgal when two Marine platoons were ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns. He made five trips into the ambush zone to rescue wounded Afghan forces and recover the bodies of fallen Marines. President Obama presented him with the military's highest honor in 2011.

Palin, 24, had a third-place finish on Dancing with the Stars and starred in her own Lifetime reality show, Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp.
