The basic trainee who died Monday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland has been identified as Kelani Thomas, 19.

Thomas, from Troy, Alabama, was in her first week of Basic Military Training, according to a news release from the 37th Training Wing. She passed all of her medical examinations during the recruiting and training process and had no health restrictions.

Two days before Thomas died, she passed her initial fitness assessment, which included a 1.5-mile run, the news release says. She was assigned to the 322nd Training Squadron at the time of her death.

"Everything looked very positive with this young lady," said Robert Rubio, a spokesman for the 37th Training Wing. "It didn't seem like there was any reason to be concerned, based on her medical history, based on all the MEPS [Military Entrance Processing Station], based on the last test they did here on the first week. Everything was green."

Basic trainees spend alternate days running and doing strength training, Rubio said. On Monday, Thomas and her fellow trainees were running.

Thomas had just finished a 15-minute paced run and was about to begin a 10-minute self-paced run when she collapsed, Rubio said. The initial run was meant as a warm-up, so the trainees were going at a slow pace.

"We mourn together for our fallen airman, Kelani Thomas," Col. Trent Edwards, commander of the 37th Training Wing, said in a statement. "Our focus, as it should be, is on taking care of her family as well as her friends and teammates here at Lackland."
