U.S. military jets escorted an Air France airliner to New York's Kennedy Airport after a threat was made against the flight, authorities said.

The FBI says the jets scrambled Monday morning after an anonymous caller claimed a chemical weapon was aboard the aircraft.

Authorities say the airliner landed safely and a search so far has turned up no weapons.

"We launched the two F-15 aircraft as a precautionary measure. It turned out to be a non-event and Air France landed safely at JFK," Lt. Commander Richlyn Ivey with the U.S. Northern Command told WCBS 880. "The fighters that were launched we turned back to home station."

The Maryland State Police said it received an anonymous call at about 6:30 a.m. of a "bomb threat" aboard the New York-bound flight. Officials at the FBI and the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center, the state's fusion center, were immediately notified about the call, the state police said in a statement. The threat was more specifically a "chemical weapons" threat, ABC News reported.

U.S. officials tried to reach Air France representatives after learning of the threat, but were unsuccessful because it is a state holiday in France.

Air France later confirmed that the flight, which originated in Paris, landed safely at JFK and that passengers disembarked normally.
