ARIVACA, Ariz. — Firefighters in southern Arizona are battling a blaze that started during a training mission involving an airman from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

The base said that an airman was three miles north of Arivaca around 12:30 p.m. on Monday when he attempted to signal an aircraft that was overhead and inadvertently started the fire.

The fire is now about 1,200 acres and 25 percent contained.

Arivaca Fire District Chief Tangye Beckham said the blaze isn't threatening any structures. She said about 50 or more firefighters were working to contain it.

The Air Force said it is cooperating fully and will investigate the incident. The airman who started the fire was participating in a combat search and rescue training.
