Staff Sgt. Raheem O. Hollis killed his 4-year-old year old stepson by "dropping or throwing him onto a hard" surface, according to charge sheets released by Fort Drum officials under the Freedom of Information Act.

Hollis, 31, was charged July 31 with two counts of murder, as well as assault and lying to authorities.

Michael L. Sanders Jr. died Dec. 10 as a result of the assault, the charges state. The assault caused "cardiac tamponade and lacerated liver," according to the charges.

Hollis, of Newark, N.J., is accused of attacking the boy at their home on post. Since the incident he repeatedly told authorities that "Michael died because he fell down the stairs."

Sanders is one of more than 118 Army children who have died from abuse or neglect over the past decade.

Hollis served three tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2009, and arrived at Fort Drum in August 2012. He is a combat engineer with the 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team. He is assigned to A Company, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion.
