VA disability compensation is a monthly payment to veterans with disabilities resulting from disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. The Veterans Affairs Department pays the tax-free compensation based on a veteran's disability rating and dependent status. Veterans must have a disability rating of 30 percent or higher to be eligible for higher payments based on whether they have a spouse or children.
 
A variety of medical and dental special pays are authorized for military doctors, nurses dentists and health care support staff, who are highly sought after in the private sector. The Defense Department pays annual special pay, incentive pay, retention bonuses, accession bonuses and more. Payments vary widely based on an individual's particular specialty.

 

 

 

2016 Veterans Disability CompensationVeterans with disabilities resulting from disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service are eligible for a tax-free monthly payment based on their disability rating and dependent status. Veterans must have a disability rating of 30 percent or higher to be eligible for higher payments based on dependent status. VA also pays Special Monthly Compensation, an additional tax-free benefit provided to veterans in certain circumstances, such as those who need aid and attendance by another person or have a specific disability, such as loss of use of one hand or leg. 2016 Medical Dental Special Pays
Medical and dental officers are entitled to a variety of special pays and retention bonuses, most of which can be drawn simultaneously for those who qualify. Medical and dental officers on active duty for more than one year are entitled to monthly variable special pay. They are entitled to annual additional special pay if they complete their internship or initial residency training and agree to serve on active duty at least one year. Officers who are board certified in their particular specialty are entitled to board-certified pay.
