An Army veteran has been nominated as the next assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs, the White House announced Monday.

Todd A. Weiler was an Army aviation officer from 1987 to 1991, and is a combat veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He is now chief executive officer of a consulting firm he founded in 2008, One Hemisphere Ventures.

Weiler also served as deputy assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs from 1993 to 1999. In 1993, he served as the White House Liaison for the Department of Defense.

Senior executive officials have been acting in the DoD position since July 2014, when Jessica Wright departed as assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs to become undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

The assistant secretary is the principal adviser to the secretary of defense and the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness for total force manpower, personnel and reserve affairs.

Weiler, a graduate of Texas Christian University, has held a number of positions in the civilian community since 1999, including:

  • Vice president of Computer World Services Corporation from 2009 to 2010.
  • Co-owner and chief operating officer of Arrowpoint Corporation from 2001 to 2008.
  • Vice president and chief information officer of Communities In Schools from 1999 to 2001.
