German police shot a U.S. soldier in his legs after he attacked a patient and police officers in a hospital, a German police officer confirmed to Military Times.

The incident happened on Thursday after the soldier was transported to the hospital for injuring his head at Oktoberfest in Munich, NBC reported on Friday. At the hospital, the soldier reportedly ripped three fire extinguishers off a wall and injured an 89-year-old patient before being shot by police.

Reached by phone on Friday, a German police officer in Munich said the soldier was shot in the legs after attacking the patient and police. The soldier has undergone an operation and his injuries are not life threatening, said the officer, who did not have any more information about the incident.

The soldier is stationed in Vilseck, near Grafenwoehr, Germany, U.S. Army Europe spokesman Bruce Anderson told Military Times.

"Whether or not he faces disciplinary action remains to be seen," Anderson wrote in an email to Military Times on Friday. "The incident is under investigation and it would be inappropriate to speculate about what happened; whether or not the soldier was under the influence, etc., before the investigation is complete."

The name of the soldier has not been released.

"We don't routinely release the name of injured or wounded Soldiers out of respect for their privacy," Anderson said.
