CHARLESTON, S.C. — Joint Base Charleston could become home to nearly 3,600 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles coming from Texas.

The Post and Courier reports the Army Corps of Engineers has reviewed plans for construction of a dozen humidity-controlled storage buildings totaling 1.6 million square feet, a 38-bay maintenance building and an armory for weapon storage.

The Corps' draft environmental assessment concludes that the new facilities would have no significant impact on the 95-acre wooded site adjoining the base in Goose Creek. The public can comment through Dec. 21.

The report says 514 of the vehicles would be ready for movement within 96 hours. Each vehicle in storage would otherwise go through maintenance every four years.

The vehicles were designed to mitigate the threat from improvised explosive devices in Iraq and Afghanistan.
