CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Defense Secretary Ash Carter said a key to helping secure the nation is for military leaders to reconnect with the technology community.

Carter said Tuesday that when he was starting out as a physicist, most of the big technology breakthroughs originated in the U.S. — and a great deal had roots in the government.

He said that's no longer true.

Carter acknowledged there has been growing distrust between the government and the technology industry — especially following revelations by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

He said he wants to meet the technology community halfway to rebuild trust.

Carter said building those bridges is also critical to making the military an attractive option for the next generation.

Carter made the comments at the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics.
