U.S., Japan test interceptor missile off Southern California

LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Missile Defense Agency says it successfully tested a missile interceptor off Southern California.

The agency says Tuesday's test of a Standard Missile-3 Block IIA was conducted in conjunction with Japan's ministry of defense and with the cooperation of the U.S. Navy.

The missile launched from San Nicholas Island in the Point Mugu Sea Range. The flight tested ejection of the missile's kinetic warhead but did not involve launching a target missile or an actual interception attempt.

The Missile Defense Agency says officials of the cooperative development project will use telemetry and other data to evaluate the performance.

The missile by Raytheon and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is intended to destroy medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
