WINDSOR COUNTY, Vt. — A new program aimed at helping veterans who live far from a Veterans Affairs medical center isn't getting much use in Vermont.

The Choice Program allows veterans to switch to private-sector doctors if they live more than 40 miles from a full-service VA hospital or can't get an appointment at the VA within 30 days.

The program is a response to long waiting lists at VA hospitals nationwide. Vermont Public Radio reports that the White River Junction VA Medical Center has notified 27,000 patients that they may choose private care, but only 300 have taken advantage of the program since it went into effect last August.

The White River Junction facility will get about $6 million over six years to improve care.
