U.S. may limit items collected at Vietnam Vets memorial

WASHINGTON — The National Park Service is considering limiting the items it collects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The agency said in a news release Tuesday that it will only keep items left at the memorial that are personal artifacts of soldiers whose names appear on the memorial; Vietnam War military service items; and protest, activism and advocacy materials related to the war.

Objects left at the wall with no direct connection to a Vietnam veteran or the Vietnam War will not be kept.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection includes more than 400,000 objects left at the memorial since its dedication in 1982.

The National Park Service is accepting public comment on the proposed changes. Comments are accepted at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/commentForm.cfm?documentID=70782 .
