Fort Drum soldier from Maryland dies in Iraq

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — A 10th Mountain Division soldier died March 11 from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad, Fort Drum officials said March 14.

Sgt. Thomas L. Latham, 23, of Delmar, Md., was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment.

Latham joined the Army in September 2002 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Ga.

His first assignment was at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, from January 2003 to March 2006, when he was reassigned to Fort Drum.

Latham deployed with his unit to Iraq in August 2006.
