23, of Ashland, Ky.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died April 4 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. Also killed was Army Staff Sgt. Jerry C. Burge.

Funeral services set for eastern Kentucky soldier killed in Iraq

WESTWOOD, Ky. — Funeral services will be held April 13 for an eastern Kentucky soldier killed in Iraq.

Cpl. Joseph “Joey” Cantrell IV, one of two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb on April 4, will be memorialized at 11 a.m. at Fairview Baptist Church.

Cantrell, 23, worked as a medic in the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

He is survived by his parents, Sondra Mullins Adkins of Ashland and Joseph Cantrell III of Flatwoods, and his brother, Chase Adkins of Ashland.

Cantrell last saw his family in February, when he made a surprise visit around Valentines Day, his mother said. He gave her a medallion in the shape of a dog tag that had a picture of himself, his mother and his brother etched into the metal.
