N.Y. soldier among latest Iraq casualties

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Sgt. James G. West, of Watertown, died Sunday in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

West, 34, died when the vehicle he was riding in collided head-on with another vehicle near Hillah, according to a DoD announcement on Wednesday. Spc. Dana Wilson, 26, of Fountain, Colo., also died in the crash. The accident is under investigation.

West was born in Seattle. He joined the Army in 1997 and became a mechanic with the 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery Brigade, based in Baumholder, Germany, according to an Army spokesman. West was married and had family in New York and Colorado, the spokesman said.

No further information about West was immediately available Wednesday night.
